Pre-Reading Assignment Five

http://school.discovery.com/schooladventures/salemwitchtrials/

Go to this site and discover all you can about the Salem Witch Trials before we begin working on Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE.

What are some of the reasons they list for this tragedy and who are some of the key players they discuss? What role did Cotton Mather and Ann Putnam play in this historic event? Who was responsible--the children or the adults--for the events that led to the hangings and the deaths of 24 innocent people?

Unfortunately, the DiscoveryEducation video contains a major error: this business about the group of girls learning about sorcery and the like from Tituba is the kitchen of the parsonage. This is not based on a single primary source. The story began being told this way in the 19th century by Charles W. Upham. The illustrations in the video are also from 19th century periodicals and histories. I continue to find it curious that with all the facsimiles and texts of primary sources available on-line that so much of this outdated, outmoded and unsubstantiated material is being cited to students today as valid sources for providing the "real story" behind what happened in Massachusetts in 1692.
